We promote to the children that learning, playing and working together supports everyone – engaging both children and adults alike!  Our staff believe that promoting and encouraging everyone to have a growth mind-set creates a positive learning culture in our school and supports all pupils to make progress to become successful lifelong learners who love learning!

Our teachers have discussed and are in agreement with the published national curriculum aims but they have also taken time to consider what they feel makes our wider school curriculum special here at Maple Infants’ and the following words were all considered important:

Our creative and experienced staff draw on the interests of the children wherever possible to develop responsive ‘child led’ cross curricular topics which teach the children key skills and knowledge which encourages them to explore and find out answers for themselves. To enhance this learning we seek relevant and inspiring enrichment opportunities for visitors to come into school or to take trips out, planned to link to the children’s learning.  To engage the children further we will always seek for each new topic theme to begin with a ‘hook’ and work towards an exciting outcome such as a display, a performance, a themed dress-up day or a presentation to parents.

Knowing that every child learns differently, our staff use a range of teaching styles to ensure all our children are engaged and that time is given to consider how individuals are going to achieve the learning outcomes in the most appropriate way for them.  They are encouraged to become independent thinkers, work collaboratively, be resilient, and confident to apply their previous learning to make links with new knowledge.

In this way they truly immerse themselves into our vision ‘Together we learn and grow’ each and every day.
We place importance in our thematic topics to ensure that effective cross curricular links are made, where relevant, to show our children how the subjects are related and opportunities are taken to explore maths, English and science in real life contexts. Our well-resourced learning environments, enhanced with evolving learning walls and good examples of work, ensure children can see and know what success looks like and recognise that staff celebrate effort and individual achievements which promotes a positive growth mind-set.
Our compact, yet flexible, school grounds are accessed daily by children to enrich their learning.  Our staff recognise that children love to be outdoors and we seek to use this space to further enhance our curriculum opportunities.
Our year teams and subject leaders work together to ensure curriculum coverage and progression across our year groups, adapting provision to meet the needs of the learners.  Our subjects may be delivered in a block or through regular weekly lessons or any combination of the two methods based on the needs of the children and the nature of the unit of work.  In line with the national curriculum expectations, the learning outcome is the focus of any lesson for all children and differentiation is the method used to get there!  Challenge is a positive and important feature in our lessons and for those who are ready, deeper learning opportunities are provided to support ‘mastery’ of a particular element or skill.
Our teachers closely monitor pupil progress and learning within lessons and over the course of a unit of work. Teachers adjust lessons and units based on this continuous feedback and assessment.  Marking using our child friendly visual codes, often during a lesson, provides immediate feedback to the children allowing them to correct misconceptions immediately or move on in their learning as appropriate.
We believe that our school curriculum not only provides our children with engaging and memorable learning experiences but also inspires lifelong learning and empowers our children appropriately for the next stage in their education.

Curriculum Maps

Here you will find copies of the curriculum maps that show the main learning topics for each half term of the academic year for each year group.

Paper copies are handed out from the classroom at the beginning of the year at the parent's information meetings and subsequently at the beginning of each half term.

They are made available for you here to download, view or print-out again.
