WC: 9/11/20    OUR WEEK IN YEAR 2
-Together we learn and grow -
A Nurturing Environment
In Jigsaw, we will be reviewing what we have been learnt so far. We will be thinking about rights, responsibilities, rewards and consequences. We will discuss how this creates a happy and safe environment where everyone is able to learn together.

Phonics
Next week the children will be learning about the ‘ai’ family. We will review ways to say ‘ai’ that we have already learnt, before exploring other less common ways.

a - as in apron, bacon
ey - as in grey, they
eigh - as in sleigh, weigh

ai – as in rain, paint,
ay - as in play, crayon
a-e - as in snake, scrape

Next week the children will be practising accurately reading and writing these tricky words:
full, pull, push, put, when, what, like, one, children, because

These will also be the spelling words that your child for the quiz next week.

This term the children will be undertaking the statutory KS1 phonics screening check. Typically, children complete this in the summer of year 1, though it was postponed due to the pandemic. You will be receiving more information shortly; please look out for this.

Reading
Next week we will be starting our text ‘Katie in London’ by James Mayhew. We will be using this text for a few weeks, so it is important that the children become familiar with it. You can access this text online here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jv8RhfDwW0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzv4WyseRSk

Now that the children have settled into school routines, this half term we will be beginning guided reading in year 2. Once a week your child will read with an adult within a small group setting. The children’s reading records will be signed when they take part in this session. Your child may not read on the same day every week, and so we ask that your child’s reading record is ready in their bag every day. Thank you for your continued support.

Writing
Using our text ‘Katie in London’ the children will practise identifying and thinking of appropriate nouns, verbs and adjectives.

The children will be using these to describe what is happening within the book. For example, the furry, golden lion jumps.

We will be encouraging the children to also use an adverb in their writing to provide more detail. For example, the furry, golden lion jumps majestically.

Increasing Vocabulary
In science, we are learning about materials, e.g. wood, plastic and metal. We are using many new words to describe their properties (what the materials are like). Some of these new words are:
dull, hard, smooth, bendy, opaque, flexible, waterproof, rough

Maths
In maths next week, we will begin to explore measurement. We will be reviewing non-standard units (e.g. hand spans) to measure, before exploring standard units (e.g. metres and centimetres). We will make estimations before measuring with a ruler. We will ensure that we correctly line up the ruler with the start of the object.

Anti-bullying week
Anti- Bullying Week, with the theme ‘United Against Bullying’ will take place from Monday 16th of November to Friday 20th of November.  Maple Infants’ Odd Socks Day will take place on Wednesday 18th November.

As a fun way to unite us in our week of activities we are inviting children to come to school wearing ‘odd socks’ on Wednesday 18th of November. Wearing odd socks is about fun and laughter, but also about a message of individuality, acceptance and tolerance.

PE
Next week there will be no PE on Monday. If you usually have PE on a Monday, please wear your kit on Wednesday instead. This change is for next week only.
