Maths at Maple Infants' School

Picture Picture In Key Stage 1 at Maple Infants, we follow a mastery approach. Our children study mathematics daily following the Primary Stars scheme, which is a partner scheme of White Rose. This is a blocked scheme, which allows for depth and breadth of learning within each strand of mathematics. Picture Maple Infants’ also works closely with the London South West Maths Hub which provides a range of professional development opportunities for teachers and support staff. All members of our staff are committed to continually improving their subject knowledge and understanding of mastery.

Our maths curriculum is further supported with the DfE accredited NCETM Mastering Number Project in Reception & KS1.

Maple Infants’ is taking part in the National for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) project to support the teaching of basic Maths skills in our school.

This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense (a deep understanding of number) for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2.

The aim over time is that children will leave Key Stage 1 and begin Key Stage 2 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Research shows that children with secure ‘number sense’ early on will make more progress later on in Maths and across the curriculum.

Each class, in Key Stage 1, has a daily ‘Mastering Number’ session, (referred to as a ‘Maths Meeting’) in addition to their daily Maths lesson. Over the year, the children will experience using a range of resources and representations, including a small abacus-like piece of equipment called a rekenrek.

Using the rekenrek
In this short video, Debbie Morgan, the NCETM’s Director for Primary, explains how the abacus-like rekenrek can be used to help children develop confidence and fluency with number.  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gtb7X2UJNWw

The National Curriculum

KS1 follow the National Curriculum.  The National Curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Useful Websites

Here are some recommended websites that may be used to explore ideas and concepts in mathematics: Picture https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/shows/numberblocks
Numberblocks on BBC provides short, child-friendly video clips for early mathematics concepts. They were created alongside mathematicians and educationalists. On their website you can find all episodes, as well as a range of games and suggestions for how you can use the clips to support your child’s maths development at home.
