Writing

Writing at Maple Infants' School

The national curriculum for writing aims to ensure that all pupils can write down their ideas fluently. This depends on children being able to:

  • spell quickly and accurately through knowing the relationship between sounds and letters, word structure and the spelling structure of words
  • articulate and communicate their ideas and organising them coherently for their reader.
  • have an awareness of their audience, purpose and context
  • use their increasingly wide knowledge of vocabulary and grammar
  • use legible and, eventually, speedy handwriting

At Maple we aim to deliver high quality teaching which supports different learning styles, and encourages all children to achieve their full potential. We guide the children to explore and exchange ideas, to discuss and plan their writing and to feel confident enough to present their work to their peers. We model the importance of respecting and valuing the opinions of others.

Wherever possible, writing activities are given a purpose and audience. Independent writing will always be preceded by looking at similar texts and practising the skills necessary in shared writing with the teacher so that pupils feel confident to write their own texts. Independent writing is supported through using dictionaries, word banks, prompt cards, writing frames and technology where appropriate.
