Maths at Maple

At Maple Infants’ School we aim to instil a love of Maths and encourage children to become confident, inquisitive learners.

It is important that the children develop a positive attitude towards Maths and understand its use in everyday life.  Maths equips children with a powerful set of tools to understand and change the world, such as logical reasoning and problem solving skills.  Maths can be a creative subject, giving rise to moments of wonder when a child solves a problem for the first time or suddenly sees a hidden connection.

In all areas of learning, including Mathematics, we actively promote children’s ‘growth mind-set’ – those with a growth mindset believe that intelligence and abilities can be developed through effort, persistence, trying different strategies and learning from mistakes.

Mathematics Mastery
Mathematics Mastery is an innovative maths teaching framework, supporting schools, students and teachers to be successful at maths.

Maple Infants' School has joined this programme and become a Mathematics Mastery partner. This programme aims to support all pupils to develop problem solving skills, deepen mathematical understanding and enhance pupils' mathematical language.
Overall, the purpose of this programme is to close the attainment gap so all pupils achieve in mathematics.
We launched this teaching programme in September 2015 for Reception and Year 1 Pupils, and will roll it out into Year 2 in September 2016.

Our Maths STAR WORDS

We have been trialing the use of ACTIONS in some classes to support the 'meaning' and 'accurate use' of this language for our pupils.

Here are some children demonstrating the actions for these MATHEMATICAL STAR WORDS that we are learning throughout our school.

The National Curriculum

KS1 follow the National Curriculum.
Mathematics Mastery is fully aligned with the aims and programmes of study outlined in the National Curriculum.
For more information about Key Stage 1 maths see the documents on www.gov.uk
