Year 2

Fire Brigade Home Safety Visit

We were visited in class today by the Fire Brigade, who were teaching the children about fire hazards in the home and how the children could teach their parents how to be alert to dangers in the home. Be prepared to be told to check you smoke detector every week!

The children really enjoyed watching the safety video and asked lots of sensible questions. Paul the Fireman was very impressed with the Oak class children. Please take time to read the literature in the book-bag. You may like to consider a free home assessment by the LFB at your home where they will fit smoke detectors free of charge!

Star Of The Week

Our Star this week is Olivia, who was nominated due to her hard work, perseverance and keen attitude in class. Well done Olivia!

Curly Wurly Science!

Rowan Class are learning lots about Materials in Science this term. We have looked at man-made and natural materials and also at whether you can change the shape of some materials by twisting, bending or stretching them. We investigated whether these changes were reversible or irreversible.

The highlight of the lesson on Tuesday was the great “Curly Wurly Challenge”. Each table group was given a Curly Wurly chocolate bar and the task to try and stretch it as long as possible in 3 minutes. We had to work in teams and quickly realized that the softer the toffee was the easier it became to stretch it. Messy!

Cars table came top with 46cm, closely followed by Tractors 35.5cm, Boats 30cm, Trains 29cm and Planes with24cm. Well done everyone.

We didn’t break the world record, but we sure had fun trying.

Our Week

We have started to learn the story of  best friends, Gerda and Kay in “The Snow Queen.” We have made notes about the story and looked at the language used in the book; in particular, the adjectives used.

Our Science Topic has changed to Materials and we enjoyed sorting materials into groups.

Well done Beth, our star of the week

Welcome back!

Welcome back to school and “Happy 2012″ to you all!

We have had a busy two days back at school.  Our New Year Resolutions have been written and, in Maths, we have been looking at arrays of numbers.

On Friday we spent some time making Origami objects to see what the children’s learning styles are….ask them to tell you their style!

We look forward to our Cinderella trip next week.
