I’m really pleased to be able to tell you about an exciting new start to 2011 for Maple Infants School as we aim to become an Eco-School.
Becoming an Eco-School is a great opportunity for children, teachers, parents and our local community to work together. We’re looking forward to getting to grips with fun projects on our journey towards more sustainable living.
You can read more about what being an Eco-School means at www.eco-school.org.uk.
Today we’d like to tell you about the team and progress on waste, energy and biodiversity.
Team - Our Eco Team is up and running bringing together staff, parents and pupils.
The Maple Eco Team so far includes:
with parents:
We’ll be selecting our pupil team from Year 2 this term.
We’re well on course towards our Bronze Award with action on:
Waste – We’re reducing our landfill waste by improving recycling and composting. We have brought new coloured bins to make it easier to separate our waste. We’re promoting re-using paper and making sure we use both sides for our writing and drawing activities, something you can do at home too.
In January we will start collecting the cores and peelings from our fruit at snack time to go in our new compost bin. We’re looking forward to showing the children how the waste breaks down and using the compost to help us grow new plants when it’s ready.
Energy – We’re taking action to cut our electricity usage with simple housekeeping steps. Some of our Year 2 children will be helping Mrs Bramble take meter readings so we can keep track of how we are doing.
Biodiversity – We raised £300 at the Maple mini market in the Autumn Term which we used to adopt eight animals for one year through a WWF scheme. We’re looking forward to talking about these animals more with the children when our info packs arrive from WWF.
There will be news about our journey towards sustainability here on our Eco-blog each term.
